At its heart, coaching is about helping people unlock their potential, build confidence and take meaningful steps forward. One of the most widely used frameworks in coaching is the GROW model.  It’s a simple, yet powerful tool.  It provides structure to conversations, enabling individuals to gain clarity, explore options and commit to action.  Whether you’re a professional coach or simply looking to have more purposeful conversations at work or at home, you can use the GROW coaching model every day.

What is the GROW model?

The GROW model was developed in the UK in the 1980s and has since become one of the most recognised coaching frameworks worldwide.  It stands for:

  • G – Goal: what do you want to achieve?
  • R – Reality: where are you now in relation to that goal?
  • O – Options: what could you do?
  • W – Will/Way Forward: what will you do?

Each stage builds naturally on the last, creating a logical yet flexible structure for conversations.

Using GROW in coaching sessions

Here’s how you might apply the model in a coaching context.

1. Goal – start with clarity

Encourage the coachee to define a clear outcome for the session or their longer-term aspirations.  A useful question might be:
“By the end of this session, what would you like to walk away with?”

2. Reality – explore the current situation

Help them reflect honestly on where they are now.  This step is about awareness, not judgement.  You might ask:
“What have you tried so far?”
“What’s working well, and what’s holding you back?”

3. Options – open up possibilities

Encourage creativity and exploration of different approaches.  Avoid jumping straight to advice.  Instead, help them discover their own ideas.  Ask:
“If there were no limits, what could you try?”
“What other perspectives might be helpful here?”

4. Will/Way Forward – commit to action

This step turns insight into progress.  Support the coachee to choose a path forward and set realistic actions.  Useful prompts include:
“What’s the first small step you’ll take?”
“On a scale of 1–10, how committed are you to this action?”

Using GROW in everyday conversations

The GROW model isn’t only for formal coaching sessions.  It can shape everyday interactions.

  • At work: use GROW when supporting colleagues through challenges or development goals.  For example, instead of giving solutions, guide them to explore their own ideas.
  • At home: parents can use GROW with children, helping them problem-solve and take ownership of decisions.  Also, it can be used in discussions to help make important decisions that affect the household.
  • For yourself: journaling or self-coaching with GROW can clarify your own thinking and keep you accountable.

Even brief conversations can benefit.  A quick “What’s your goal here?  What’s one option?  What will you do next?” can help someone move forward with confidence.

Why the GROW model works

  • It’s simple – easy to remember and apply in any setting.
  • It’s empowering – encourages people to find their own answers.
  • It’s adaptable – works in both structured coaching sessions and everyday chats.

By using GROW, you create space for reflection, insight and purposeful action – the foundations of effective coaching.

Whether you’re a qualified coach or simply looking to support others more effectively, the GROW coaching model is a practical, proven framework that turns conversations into catalysts for growth.
