At Coaching4Careers (C4C), our associate network continues to grow. We’re pleased to introduce Michael Widera, one of our newest associates, whose experience adds a strong and practical HR solution to the support we can offer.
Michael brings over two decades of corporate HR experience, having started his career on BP’s graduate programme. During that time, he worked across large-scale projects, stakeholder management and organisational change. In recent years, he has chosen to step closer to the frontline of business, supporting small and medium-sized organisations directly.
Today, Michael predominantly works with businesses that may not have an in-house HR function. Often these are companies with between eight and twenty employees, led by founders who are juggling growth, delivery and day-to-day pressures all at once.
What Michael brings to SMEs
Michael describes his work through three clear layers.
- Foundations: Making sure contracts, policies and compliance are in place so the business, and its’ people, are safe and secure.
- Operations: Supporting day-to-day people matters, from maternity leave and performance conversations to complex employee relations issues.
- Strategy: Helping business owners think ahead: What skills will we need? How should roles evolve? What kind of culture are we building?
The challenges
In speaking with Michael, what stands out is the range of mindsets across the SME landscape. Some business owners only reach out when something has gone wrong. HR becomes reactive, associated with crisis and cost.
Others are curious but unsure. They sense that investing in people matters, but they are not clear what that investment should look like or whether it is affordable.
Finally, there are the leaders who see people as a central part of business growth from the outset. They understand that culture and fairness are not “nice to have” extras but foundations for sustainable success.
Across all of these scenarios, one theme remains consistent: business owners are often isolated when it comes to people decisions. They may have accountants, IT providers and legal advisers, yet no trusted sounding board for the everyday realities of leading and employing others.
Why this matters for C4C
Michael’s expertise complements C4C’s established strengths in coaching, leadership development and organisational support. It adds a practical HR lens to our wider work around leadership, growth and business health.
As we continue conversations with SMEs, we are increasingly aware that the challenges they face are rarely just about strategy or skills in isolation. They are about people, how they are supported, developed and managed well.
Introducing Michael to our associate network strengthens our ability to respond to those real-world challenges in a grounded, practical way.
